Deceitful Eyes - Pavo cristus draconem

Description

Are you fooled by the deceit in my eyes?

Or is it the deceit in your eyes, seeing what is not there?

Size -A4, Time -6+ hours, Media -Whsmith coloured pencils

This took a loong time, but it was fun to do. I wish that I had done this on a a larger page, I might have braved a border, and a second wing...sshhh, we can pretend it's there, just hiding...xD

The feathers on its head fan out when the male is displaying intimidation towards potential threats, or when courting a female. He will also fan out his stunning wings, and his elongated tail feathers rise up and create a massive fan. This behaviour deceives thet target into believing that the dragon is larger, and distracts a threat from attacking the body, instead causing them to rip out replaceable feathers.

Females will carefully inspect the feathers conditions whilst the male boasts of his beauty. During the breeding season males extensively preen and bathe, carefully cleaning their feathers. Any sign of feather damage, feather loss, or discolouration, could discourage the female and lead to unsuccessful breeding. Males try to impress a harem of females. Together they roost in tree branches in gatherings known as Parties.

Latin name: Pavo cristus draconem
Common name: Blue peacock dragon

Males have a unique adaptation of feathers on their faces, these mimic eyes and are located above their true eyes. This is a protective stratergy, reducing the risk of damage to the true eyes, and also causing the dragon's head to appear larger. Did you notice? Or did you think that his head/eyes looked out of proportion? =3

Feedback always appreciated! =D

What else do you think I could have done?
